Come adventure! From August 6-August 11, we are taking a group from Community of Hope backcountry hiking Virginia's Triple Crown -- one of the most scenic stretches of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. We take backpacking trips because they're such an awesome way to get away from the daily grind, enjoy God's creation, stretch physical and mental limits, bond with one another community, and grow in faith.

This year's hike is a moderate, 4-day, 34 mile hike, with three days spent on the AT and an out-and-back day hike in a beautiful wilderness area on day 4. You should expect long days, sore legs, incredible views, and lots of fun. When we're done hiking, we'll drive Staunton, VA, a nearby city with places to eat and tour, and a hotel with showers and real beds waiting to welcome us.

Who CAN GO?

This trip is open to anyone ages 14+ The limit for groups hiking the AT is 10 people, so register now to secure your spot. You don't need to be an experienced outdoor enthusiast to go. All you need is a good attitude and desire to grow personally.

When IS THE TRIP?

Sunday, August 6 - Friday August 11.

WHAT IS THE ITINERARY?

Sunday 8/6: Attend service at Community of Hope, then depart directly from church around 12PM. We will drive to the Dragon's Tooth trailhead in Catawba, VA, hike .25 miles to our first campsite.

Monday 8/7: We will spend the day hiking 9.2 miles to Catawba Mountain Shelter,

Tuesday 8/8: We will spend the day hiking 9.1 miles to Lambert's Meadow shelter, where we will camp for the night.

Wednesday 8/9: We will spend the day hiking 9.66 miles to Tinker Cliff, the end of our AT stretch, rejoin our cars, and stay in a local hiker-friendly hotel.

Thursday 8/10: We'll spend part of the day hiking an easy, 6-mile out-and-back trail without our packs, enjoying some beautiful wilderness and swimming spots along the way. Then, we'll drive to Staunton, eat dinner out, and enjoy real-life showers and beds at our hotel!

Friday 8/11:  We'll get to spend the morning enjoying the sites and shops in Staunton, and hit the road in the early afternoon. We should arrive back at Community of Hope around 8 or 9 PM.

HOW MUCH WILL IT CosT?

The cost of this trip is $100, which includes all transportation costs, camping permit fees, breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks while we're camping, and a one-night stay at our hotel in Staunton with hotel breakfast included. Checks can be made out to Community of Hope.

Not included in this price are lunch and dinner on the way down and back, (we'll stop at fast-food places or you can pack something), and the dinner that we'll eat out in Staunton on Thursday night. Make sure to bring a card or some cash to cover those meals!

How Does the food work?

Food on this trip breaks down into three parts: 

On the way down:

We will stop for a fast-food lunch and dinner on our way to Dragon's Tooth. This is not included in trip cost.

WHILE CAMPING:

We will provide three backcountry breakfasts, lunches, and snack packs, and two dinners for you to carry in your pack, and will supply food cozies and fuel to cook with. These are included in the cost of the trip. We'll give you lots more details at our pre-departure meeting, and will have a food-prep session for anyone wanting to help out with/learn more about backpacking cooking on Monday, May 22 at 4:00PM  Community of Hope.

AFTER CAMPING, IN STAUNTON:

We will eat one dinner and one lunch out at restaurants in Staunton. These are not included in the cost of the trip, so plan accordingly. Breakfast at the hotels are included in the trip cost.

How do I Register?

The remainder of your payment can be turned in on the day of departure. There's no deadline to register, but we do have to cap our group at 10 people, so register as soon as you can to ensure a spot. Note: If you are thinking about registering but have a question you'd like answered first, feel free to use the form below.

If you desire to go on this trip, we'll help make sure you have everything you need. We will go over specifics at our pre-departure meeting on Wednesday, July 19 at 7:00 PM and make sure to answer any questions you might have.
